Low Voltage Lights

Saving energy with low voltage lights, energy efficient lighting.

Low voltage lighting is great to have around the outside of your home. Many of us will use it as a way to provide safety, to celebrate the holidays, or simply to decorate the garden that we have created. Learn how easy it is to install this on your own by following the simple steps that we have set up for you.

The first thing that you need to do is find a transformer that will work with multiple cable connections. When you have found one that will work with the lights that you purchased you will need to mount it to a post or a stake. This will go somewhere around the outside of the home and should be one foot from the ground and one foot from the outlet. When installing this you want to make sure that all power leading to it is turned off and that you place a waterproof cover over it.

The manufacturer’s instructions that came with the lighting fixtures that you purchased should be able to tell you what size cable you need. Attach this cable to the transformer and remove between 5/8” to ¾” of insulation from the wires. Next you will need to slide the stripped wires under the terminal screws that are on the bottom of the transformer. Next you will place the fixture in the run that is ten feet from the transformer.

Now it is time to determine where you want each light fixture to be placed. It is best to have them between eight to ten feet apart form each other to illuminate everything better. Try to go outside with a flashlight and light up certain areas to give you an idea of how it will look.

When you have situated them you will now need to bury the cables in a trench that is six inches deep. Leave enough slack for each light juncture so that it will be able to connect to the fixtures. Also leave a small amount of cable out from the soil at each different fixture.

Carefully attach the fixture to the cable following the directions from your manufacturer. The majority of lights that you purchase will connect to a cable using a two part connector that will pierce the lock into place. Now turn the transformer on to make sure that everything is working properly. Make sure that each light fixture is connected to a ground stake and firmly in place. The top of the stake should be flush with the ground.
